Background Info

Illnesses related to traditional cigarette smoking, including during pregnancy, is recorded as standard. Vaping is a relatively new phenomena, however, it is still a form of smoking which adversely affects the health of the Scottish people.

NHS Health Scotland reported in 2015, that there are around 10,000 smoking related deaths every year in Scotland. Each year smoking is also responsible for around 33,500 hospital admissions. This does not take into account vaping related hospital admissions or deaths.

The Daily Record reported on 29 September 2019 that children are now being targeted and vaping oils were being marketed at children and sold on online auction website E-Bay without any age checks.

Thirteen people have died in the United States of America because of vaping related lung disease. These deaths have resulted during a multi-state outbreak of lung injuries which have been associated with vaping according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. 805 vaping related injuries have been reported by 46 US States.

US Health Officials have called on their citizens not to use vaping products until more research is conducted into the use of vaping and e-cigarettes.

The Scottish Parliament must stand up to the vaping industry, and do all it can to record vaping data so that health interventions, such as by a General Practitioner can take place.  It also affords the Scottish Government the opportunities when required, to run specific anti-vaping campaigns to improve the Nation's health.
