Witness Diversity at the Scottish Parliament
The Convener of the Equalities and Human Rights Committee wrote to the Committee on 9 December 2019 regarding an update on the witness diversity statistics following their consideration of the Scottish Parliament's statistics for the parliamentary year 2018-19.

Following consideration of the Scottish Statutory Instrument at its meeting on 8 October, the Convener wrote to the Cabinet Secretary for Health and Sport seeking clarification:
European Union - 'no-deal' exit
In August 2019 the UK Government published the "Operation Yellowhammer" document - the name given to contingency plans to prepare for leaving the European Union (EU) without a deal. Following this publication, the Convener of the Health and Sport Committee wrote to the Cabinet Secretary for Health and Sport seeking updates on the Scottish Government's exit preparations, particularly in relation to health and social care issues referenced in the Operation Yellowhammer document.
We received a response from the Cabinet Secretary for Health and Sport on 17 October 2019.
Drug Deaths Taskforce
The Minister for Public Health, Sport and Wellbeing wrote to the Convener on 5 July 2019 advising of the formation of a Drug Deaths Taskforce to examine the key drivers of drug deaths in Scotland and consider what changes both in practice and in law are required to support better health outcomes.
On 29 January 2020, the Minister for Public Health, Sport and Wellbeing wrote to the Convener on behalf of the Drug Deaths Taskforce to highlight specific activities which must now be translated into local strategies by way of response to the continuing rise in drug-related deaths. A report on evidence-based strategies for preventing drug-related deaths in Scotland was also included in the correspondance.
Common Frameworks - European Union (Withdrawal) Act
Our Convener wrote to the Cabinet Secretary for Health and Sport on 29 May 2019 seeking an update on how the Scottish Government is going to engage in relation to legislative changes following on from the UK's withdrawal from the European Union.
We received a response from the Cabinet Secretary for Health and Sport on 10 June 2019.
NHS Tayside - internal Carseview Centre Assessment Report
Following recent media coverage regarding the above Report into treatment of patients at Carseview, the Minister for Mental Health wrote to the Convener on 1 May 2019.
Review of Health and Sport Committee Inquiries 2017
Following a recent review of the Committee's 2017 inquiries, the Convener wrote to the Cabinet Secretary for Health and Sport seeking updates on two of the inquiries, namely Child Protection in Sport and Sport for Everyone.
We received a response from the Minister for Public Health, Sport and Wellbeing on 3 May 2019.
Following the above response from the Minister for Public Health, Sport and Wellbeing, the Convener wrote a letter to Johann Lamont MSP, Convener of the Public Petitions Committee to help inform Petition number PE01319 - Improving Youth Football in Scotland.
The Convener also wrote to Clare Adamson MSP, Convener of the Education and Skills Committee regarding an update on the PVG Scheme to help inform their forthcoming consideration of the Disclosure (Scotland) Bill.
In the Minister for Public Health, Sport and Wellbeing's letter of 3 May, reference was made to sportscotland's Equality Mainstreaming and Outcome Progress report. We received a letter and the report from sportscotland on 4 July 2019.
Healthcare Improvement Scotland Report - "Clinical Management of Breast Cancer in NHS Tayside"
Jeane Freeman MSP, Cabinet Secretary for Health and Sport wrote to the Convener on 1 April 2019 regarding the findings and recommendations in the above Report published by Healthcare Improvement Scotland. The findings of the Report are being considered urgently to ensure that patients and families are fully informed and supported with any concerns they may have. UK Exit from the European Union - Supply of medicines and medical devices
Jeane Freeman MSP, Cabinet Secretary for Health and Sport, wrote to the Convener on 28 March 2019 to draw the Committee's attention to a letter sent to health and social care professionals and organisations on 27 March by the Chief Medical Officer and the Chief Pharmaceutical Officer outlining steps being taken to support continuity of the supply of medicines and medical supplies in the event of a no deal Brexit.
Transvaginal mesh removal
The Cabinet Secretary for Health and Sport wrote to the Committee on 8 March 2019 to outline action that the Scottish Government will be taking following the Chamber debate which took place on 5 March 2019.
The Cabinet Secretary for Health and Sport sent a further letter to the Committe on 3 April 2019 setting out action that the Scottish Government and Health Boards will take, including the short-time working group set up to review and identify areas of best practice.
Independent Review of NHS Lanarkshire's process on the redevelopment of University Hospital Monklands
The Cabinet Secretary for Health and Sport wrote to the Committee on 5 March 2019 to provide an update on the progress of the independent review set up regarding the redevelopment of University Hospital Monklands. This included a progress report to date, with a final report and recommendations due later in the year.
The Cabinet Secretary for Health and Sport wrote to the Committee on 27 June 2019 to advise that the Report of the Independent Review Panel on the process followed by NHS Lanarkshire regarding Monklands was now published, together with its recommendations.
Hospital Standardised Mortality Ratios (HSMR)
The Cabinet Secretary for Health and Sport wrote to the Committee on 28 February 2019 regarding future changes to the methodology and reporting of Hospital Standardised Mortality Rates following a review and subsequent recommendations by the NHS NSS Information Services Division.
Cannabis-based products for medicinal use
The Scottish Government's Chief Medical Officer, Dr Catherine Calderwood recently issued guidance in relation to cannabis-based products for medicinal use. A further review is being undertaken, with the expectation of additional guidance and advice being available later this year. The Committee has written to the Chief Medical Officer seeking further information on access to treatments, monitoring and prescribing.
The Committee received a response on 19 February 2019.
Expert review of mental health and wellbeing support for young people in custody: HMP&YOI Polmont
The Cabinet Secretary for Justice wrote to the Convener on 17 January advising of the appointment of the lead to undertake the above review. He also advised of the establishment of a short life working group and the Terms of Reference.
The Cabinet Secretary for Justice wrote to the Convener on 21 May advising that the review had now concluded and a report published.
Integrated National Health and Social Care Workforce Plan
The Cabinet Secretary for Health and Sport wrote to the Convener on 3 December to provide an update on the joint publication of the Integrated National Health and Social Care Workforce Plan by the Scottish Government and COSLA.
