Local commercial radio

In October 2018, regulations defining localness in local commercial radio were changed. As a result, the minimum amount of locally produced programming was reduced from 43 hours per week to 15 hours.

The Committee has been scrutinising the impact of that decision.

The Committee took evidence from representatives from media company Global at its meeting on 14 March 2019. At its meeting on 16 May 2019, the Committee took evidence from Ofcom, representatives from Bauer Media and DC Thomson Media.

The Committee wrote to Ofcom and to Bauer following its evidence session on local commercial radio on 14 March 2019.

Committee members received a letter from Bauer following a Members' Business debate, in the name of George Adam MSP, on local radio on 22 May 2019.

The Committee wrote to Ofcom following its evidence session on 16 May 2019.

The Committee wrote to the Secretary of State for the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport on 27 August 2019.

Ofcom wrote to the Committee on 6 September 2019.
