The power of communities to make change happen will be the focus of meetings in Aberdeen and Glasgow today as the Local Government and Regeneration Committee continues its inquiry into regeneration.
A project to develop better outdoor playing opportunities for children in Aberdeen and the impact which regeneration can have on women in local communities will be discussed during a series of meetings aimed at learning more about what regeneration means to those in the heart of communities.
In advance of visiting Aberdeen, Committee Convener Kevin Stewart MSP said:
“Our inquiry is looking at regeneration in Scotland but for this inquiry it is not just about looking at the policy itself. We want to see how this works in practice and the impact it has had on communities across Scotland in making change happen.
“The Seaton Backies project is a great example of people working together within their local communities to make real improvements to the lives of people from Aberdeen. These are ordinary people and we want to hear how difficult it was for them to achieve these extraordinary results.”
Speaking ahead of the visit to Glasgow, Committee Deputy Convener John Wilson said:
“Regeneration must particularly benefit deprived and vulnerable groups, and our Committee wants to hear first-hand about what more needs to be done to ensure that people all across Scotland can benefit from the changes which regeneration can bring.”
Background
Both visits take place on Monday 18 February. Kevin Stewart MSP (Committee Convener), Stewart Stevenson MSP and Anne McTaggart MSP will visit Aberdeen, with John Wilson (Committee Deputy Convener), Margaret Mitchell MSP, John Pentland MSP and Stuart McMillian MSP hearing about local experiences in Glasgow.
The Local Government and Regeneration Committee launched its inquiry into regeneration in January with the remit of identifying and examining best practice and limitations in relation to the delivery of regeneration in Scotland.
During the inquiry the Committee will examine practical issues – such as how communities can be supported in regeneration projects – as well as strategies and policies currently in place.
