Gaelic language day at Holyrood

Friday is Gaelic Language Day at Holyrood. Events include Gaelic singing workshops, free guided tours of the Parliament building in Gaelic and an art installation which explores the story of Gaelic communities in Glasgow.

Gaelic Language Day is supported by Bòrd na Gaidhlig.

All events are open to the public on Friday 26 November, with some activities extending into the weekend to coincide with the Parliament’s Jacobite-themed ‘Rebels with a Cause’ exhibition and family weekend.

Free Gaelic Singing Workshops (1-1.5 hours)

As part of Gaelic Language Day and following the Jacobite theme of the 'Rebels with a Cause' exhibition and the St. Andrew's Day family weekend, we are offering you the chance to come along and learn some Gaelic songs from the 18th Century.

These free workshops, held by Fiona MacKenzie and Deirdre McMahon, will focus on music from the Jacobite period and are open to all those with an interest in Gaelic singing whatever your age or competence. Why not come along and join in?

Three free workshops will be held throughout the day at the following times:

10.00, 12.00 and 14.00. All three sessions are heavily booked, but late availability is still possible.

Free Gaelic Guided Tours (30 mins)

Why not try a guided tour around Holyrood in Gaelic? 

Four special public tours will run at: 10.30, 11.30, 12.30 and 13.15

Your guide will take you on a Gaelic tour of the Parliament and even if you are not fluent in the language why not sign up, come along and get a flavour of the language.

All four tours are heavily booked, but late availability is still possible.

Gaelic Information Stall & Gaelic Taster Sessions

Throughout the day the Parliament's Gaelic Officer will run a stall in the Public hall, why not pop in, visit us, learn a bit of Gaelic and about Gaelic at the Scottish Parliament?

Free Gaelic information leaflets for fluent speakers and learners will be available throughout the weekend, as well as our “taster” leaflet to help you learn some Gaelic.

Jacobite Storytelling sessions in Committee Room 1 (in association with the Storytelling Centre)

Join us for exciting stories of heroes and spies, soldiers and kings as our storytellers act out the adventures of the Jacobites.

14.00-15.00 (Gaelic) with James MacDonald-Reid

Sunday 28 November

15.00-16.00 (Gaelic) with Pàdhraig MacNèill
