On Monday 29th January, the Scottish Parliament’s Education Committee will be visiting Peterhead, Aberdeenshire as it investigates the potential impact of the Scottish Government’s proposals to reform education in Scotland.
These reforms include:
- The creation of a head-teachers’ charter to give head-teachers more power over the way their schools are run;
- Further emphasis to be placed on pupil participation and empowerment;
- The introduction of measures to improve parental and community engagement.
As part of the visit, the Committee will hold a number of meetings with teachers, pupils and members of the public to find out more about the practical effects these reforms will have on schools. They will also be asking what needs to be done to ensure that schools are supported in their implementation.
Committee Convener, James Dornan MSP, said:
“These education reforms have the potential to fundamentally alter the face of Scottish education, which is why it’s so important that we make efforts to engage with as many of the people who this directly affects as possible.
“Teachers, pupils and parents all have a stake in ensuring Scotland’s education system is strong and we want to know what you think about these changes. Will they have a positive impact? And what other changes would you suggest the Government should make?
“Come along, have your say, and let us know what you think!”
Members of the public are invited to join the Committee at 17.15 where they can watch the Committee as it takes evidence before joining the Committee at 18.30 to discuss the reforms and share their ideas. Light refreshments will be provided. Both meetings take place in the (Rescue Hall, 25 Prince Street, Peterhead).
