What could changes to the way education is delivered in Scotland mean for you? This is the question that MSPs from the Scottish Parliament’s Education and Skills Committee will be asking as they visit Glasgow later this month.
On Monday 15 January 2018, the Committee wants to hear from you as it visits The Lighthouse, Glasgow. The visit is part of the Committee’s work looking at the Scottish Government’s proposals for education reform. These include giving more power to headteachers over funding and staffing as well as measures to encourage parental and community involvement. A quick read guide to the changes is available here.
The Committee wants to hear from young people, parents and those who work in schools to find out their views on the proposed changes including what impact these would have on schools and what support schools need to make changes.
As well as holding meetings, the Committee will also visit local primary schools to hear from headteachers and pupils.
Committee Convener, James Dornan MSP said:
“There couldn’t be a more important topic for us to come to Glasgow than the future of education itself.
“The Scottish Government has issued plans for radical changes to the way education is delivered in Scotland with a main aim of closing the attainment gap. We want to know what you think of these ideas, whether they will make a difference and what your suggestions for change might be.
“It is vital we hear from those who have experience of the education system in order that we know what these changes will mean in practice so come and have your say and let us know what you think.”
The Committee would like members of the public to come to the Lighthouse, 11 Mitchell Lane, Glasgow at from 6.00 pm to 7.30 pm to share their views. Drinks and snacks will be provided.
There will also be the opportunity to see the Committee in action at 4.30 pm as it holds a formal meeting with local education authorities.

The Scottish Government is currently consulting on ideas to reform education in Scotland with the aim of publishing the Education (Scotland) Bill next year. The Education and Skills Committee is undertaking pre-legislative scrutiny to inform their consideration of this Bill when it is introduced.
