The Scottish Parliament has become the first parliament in the world to be awarded triple certification to the Carbon Trust Standard in recognition of achievements in reducing carbon, waste and water use.
This independent certification is awarded by the Carbon Trust to organisations who demonstrate that their commitment to sustainability is matched by genuine progress. To achieve the triple standard, an organisation has to show year-on-year reductions of carbon emissions, waste output and water use.
David McGill, Scottish Parliament Assistant Chief Executive and Chair of the Environment and Sustainability Board said:
“This certification is recognition of the ambitious targets which we have set for the organisation. We are determined to make lasting and real change in how we operate to ensure that this is done in a sustainable way. In the past year this has included upgrading to LED lighting and launching a sustainable travel plan to encourage those working in the building to adopt sustainable methods to commute to and from work.
“To become the first parliament in the world to achieve this triple standard is a sign of our determination to meet our targets. However, we recognise that there is still more to do as we look ahead to build on our current performance in the coming year.”
Morgan Jones, Associate Director at the Carbon Trust, said:
“The Scottish Parliament has introduced some of the world’s most progressive environmental legislation. So it is good to see that as an organisation it is also making continuous improvements in reducing the direct environmental impact from its operations. We would like to congratulate everyone at the Scottish Parliament that has contributed to the hard work that goes into achieving the Carbon Trust Standard.”
