Tom has lived in Aberdeen for 43 years, always in Rosemount/Queen’s Cross area and has been married to Kate since 1972. He has three grown-up children, one of whom is still in Aberdeen, employed in the offshore oil industry.

Educated in England and a graduate of King’s College London, he is a civil engineer by profession and has worked in the UK and then overseas for a number of years in West Africa. After obtaining an MBA from Cranfield Business School in 1972, Tom joined a construction group in their corporate planning department. On arriving in Aberdeen in the early 70s, Tom managed an oil service company until joining Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen Business School in 1981 where he was responsible for building its MBA program. He was a senior lecturer with RGU for 26 years.

Tom now advises on corporate and market affairs, with a particular interest in China. He has also been closely associated with quality assurance organisations for Scottish Salmon Industry and Aquaculture, having been on their certification boards continuously since the late 1980s. He is a trustee of the Marketing Trust, a marketing research charity based in London.

In 1987, he became Grampian regional councillor, serving nine years as a representative for Holborn and then, on the demise of Grampian Region in 1996, he spent two years as councillor in Aberdeen District Council representing Queen’s Cross. More recently, Tom stood in the by-election for the City Council (October 2015) Midstocket / Rosemount, and in Aberdeen Central for the Holyrood elections in 2016. Tom successfully stood in the Midstocket / Rosemount ward in the 2017 local government elections, and subsequently replaced Ross Thomson as a Member of the Scottish Parliament for the North East of Scotland, being sworn in on 20 June, 2017.

Tom was also a Justice of the Peace for 20 years. 

Tom is a keen sailor and is PADI Advanced Diver. He is also Treasurer of Aberdeen and Crathes Croquet Association, Aberdeen University’s Chinese Studies Group, and Highlands and Moray Sailing Association.
