Written Submission:

Do you see discarded single use drinks cups littering your community?

Are there any measures which would encourage people to use reusable coffee / drinks cups?

Would a tax on single use drinks cups, similar to that applied to carrier bags, have any impact?

Yes I see them littering all over I think a small charge for a cup may help but unlike bags this is not the same thing, as a bag you can bring to put things in from home, a cup to get coffee etc is different. I think a small amount given on their return to the shop may help say 2p if you give back your cup, again though most people who dispose of these cups are walking around the streets drinking the contents, so would be unlikely to go back to where they bought it or a chain orcafe shop where they bought it. Perhaps give discounts on drinks to people who bring their own cup is one small thing, but not always practical. Maybe drop of a large bag of disposable cups and get money in return like aluminium.

An excellent cause and one that Government must address to stop us being buried under a mountain of waste!

I think that this is a very pleasant idea as this helps protect my cat from eating the litter that is left on the ground

It is depressing to see discarded cups littering the streets, particularly in places like Edinburgh and Glasgow. A tax on plastic cups (like 5p charges on plastic bags) I feel would be a good idea, but legislation should also be expanded to include a tax on other take-away food carriers, like polystyrene take-away chip boxes, which can harm the environment.

I hope this is a success. Apart from the biodegradable angle I would like to see less of these cups lying about as litter
