Parliament welcomes Lithuanian Ambassador

This Thursday, the Scottish Parliament welcomes the Ambassador of Lithuania, Her Excellency Ms Asta Skaisgiryte Liauskiene to Holyrood.

The Ambassador will meet the Presiding Officer ahead of giving evidence to the European and External Relations Committee. 

Lithuania currently holds the Presidency of the Council of the European Union, during which efforts are being focussed on enhancing the EU’s abilities to provide adequate response to economic, financial, social and energy challenges.

In the course of its Presidency, Lithuania has made a commitment to promoting active dialogue and close partnership with the European Parliament and the European Commission.

The objectives of the Lithuanian Presidency are as follows:

  • Credible Europe with a stable financial sector and public finance and effective growth oriented EU economic governance and stronger social dimension,
  • Growing Europe through greater investment into research and technological development, deeper integration of the internal market, as well as better employment opportunities and sustainable social security,
  • Open Europe able to tackle global challenges effectively, promoting democratic values, contributing to safe neighbourhood, and actively protecting the rights of EU citizens.

During the meetings at Holyrood, the Ambassador will outline the work that has been undertaken during the Lithuanian Presidency to date and discuss the priorities for the Presidency with MSPs.

The European and External Relations Committee meeting will be webcast live on Parliament TV from 10.30am on Thursday.
