Teaching pack for foreign-language studyThe teaching of languages in two Fife primary schools will be under the spotlight on Monday as Roderick Campbell MSP, member of the European and External Relations Committee, visits Balmerino Primary School in Gauldry and Leuchars Primary School in Leuchars.

The visit is part of the Committee’s inquiry into teaching of languages in primary schools. Earlier this year, the Scottish Government recommended that children should learn a second language from Primary 1 and that learning of a third language should start no later than Primary 5. The Committee has determined that it wants to look at this policy aim, the capacity within the curriculum for this, and the role of languages in supporting the economy.

Members want to hear first-hand about children learning a second and third language at primary school. Mr Campbell will meet teachers; observe teaching in practice in various French language classes and chat to parents and pupils.
