Economy committee to hold energy prices evidence session

22.06.2011

Representatives from the ‘big six’ energy suppliers, the regulator Ofgem, consumer groups and fuel poverty bodies will give evidence on energy prices to the Economy, Energy and Tourism Committee on Wednesday 29 June at 10am in committee room 4.

Committee Convener Gavin Brown MSP said:

“We want a very focussed evidence session with energy suppliers, regulators and consumer and business representatives to look at the proposed rise in energy prices announced by one supplier earlier this month.

“The Committee is obviously aware of the global energy market but is keen to hear the justification for price rises, whether other suppliers will follow suit and the reaction of the regulator Ofgem. Equally, we want to hear about the impact these energy prices will have on households and businesses in Scotland.

“It is important that the Committee is convinced that the suppliers and the regulator are doing all that they can to minimise the impact of these price rises on low income families and not to prejudice a return to economic growth.”
