28 January 2014: The Committee took evidence from Ellie Harrison, and Paula Fraser, Say No to Tesco campaign. The Committee agreed to seek further written evidence from the petitioner and write to the Scottish Government, the Federation of Small Businesses in Scotland and a range of local authorities, including Glasgow City Council and Falkirk Council.   • Are you alarmed at the number of new Tesco 'Express', Sainsbury's 'Local' or Morrison 'M Local' stores which have opened in your area in the last few years?
  • Is this having a detrimental impact on the local, independent traders nearby?
  • Do you often have no choice but to shop in the new chain supermarkets because all the old independent traders have been forced to close?
  • Do you think communities should have a greater say in what new shops open on their local high streets?
  • Should local councils have power to actively support local independent traders and discriminate against supermarket giants when necessary?

 

The co-op determined to open a store in our village despite the community saying no - they are so arrogant and don't listen. It would kill our wee local shops which sustain a number of families and more

Tesco is not only taking the place of local traders, they are becoming a large, ominous, pervading force with their brightly lit shop fronts open all night.

If you really want to reign in a corporation, then just don't buy their products and spend your money in smaller local businesses that really need your support.

When Tesco and the other big chains move into and area, they are able to use their economic muscle to out gun the small independent traders. These presence of small traders is what gives an area it's character and invigorates the community. Once these traders are gone, all we will have left is the supermarkets. What kind of Orwellian prospect is that?

Absolutely agree with this, the power of supermarkets must be reined in. This is just the tip of the iceberg of what really needs to be done.

Multinationals such as Tesco sook up the economic life blood of any community they are in, destroying the fabric of local society in the process. When the small traders go to the wall, the fine fibres of community interaction are severed. A dependency on the multinational is also created. And with the technology they use to monitor customers, mass manipulation of people is the next step.

Tescopoly puts local businesses in danger and takes away from the personality of community high streets. I've been boycotting Tesco for about two years and feel my diet has improved and I feel closer to my local community.

local councils should also consider the detrimental effect that parking charges have on small local businesses on the high street.
