Date Lodged: 10 June 2019

Calling on the Scottish Parliament to urge the Scottish Government to develop a natural flood alleviation strategy under the Flood Risk Management (Scotland) Act 2009.

Petition History:

Summary

20 June 2019: The Committee agreed to write to the Scottish Government, the Scottish Environment Protection Agency, Scottish Natural Heritage, the James Hutton Institute, National Farmers' Union Scotland and Scottish Land & Estates and Fisheries Management Scotland. 5 December 2019: The Committee agreed to close the petition under Rule 15.7 of Standing Orders on the basis that the Scottish Government does not support the production of a separate natural flood alleviation strategy and considers natural flood management techniques to be one element of its wider national flooding strategy, which will be published in 2020. Do you agree that Scotland has an opportunity to make better use of sustainable natural flood alleviation techniques?

What benefits do you consider these techniques can deliver?

Are you aware of other techniques that have been used elsewhere that could also be successful in Scotland?

This sounds a realistic and viable option. It would also require stringent law enforcement against persecution of the beaver population.

Beavers provide important benefits in managing downstream flooding, also improving riparian diversity. I believe that the benefits beaver's provide as landscape engineers is much greater than localised crop and timber disruption. Europe has successfully managed beavers where they were causing problems for man years, using a variety of humane measures, including moving them to more suitable habitat.

Simply appalled that beavers were given protection from slaughter one day yet at the same time permission granted for them to be culled and their homes demolished.

It is high time that SG took natural flood alleviation more seriously. The disgraceful killing of the supposedly protected braver should stop. The licensing process should be reviewed and priority given to mitigation and translocation.

I very much agree with this petition. I have been campaigning for beavers for years and have them living yards from my house. I am very well aware of their incredible capacity to contribute to soft engineering solutions for the prevention of flooding at a fraction of the cost of concrete barriers which has been researched on our land by Stirling University. As climate change progresses we need creative and regenerative solutions to the problems it brings which also reduce emissions and sequester carbon. Concrete does the opposite and its use should therefore be minimised.

Why reintroduce a species just to then kill it? Typical humans. History is never a teacher to some.
