We believe that if the industry is to grow it must act more responsibly and embrace closed containment. Do you agree that the only way this is going to occur in Scotland is if the Scottish Government acts and ensures compliance?

What are your views on the industry’s argument that this method is too expensive?

Why do you think that the relevant agencies in Scotland and the Scottish Government don’t appear to want or insist that for sustainability it is used?

This is the time to have your say, exert your influence and encourage for a more sustainable salmon farming industry in Scotland. We would welcome any other thoughts you have on this issue.

 

If we allow Salmon farms to grow using open nets we will lose our claim to have pristine waters on the West Coast of Scotland.

It is scandalous that there is not a single close containment salmon fish farm in the UK or yet any plans for such. SEPA told me.

The salmon aquaculture industry has had ample time to introduce improvements to salmon production that eliminates environmental degradation and high dependency on chemicals that this industry has a world wide reputation. The improvements necessary have not been forthcoming and the industry is striving to increase production levels in Scotland. Disease continues to be an issue and the industry mortality numbers are in excess of 20%, many many tons of carcasses have to be disposed of. It's time for the Scottish government to set a timetable whereby the industry has to move over to closed containment methods of production.

Act now it may all ready be too late. Many if my friends have stopped using Scotish salmon and visiting Scotland for fishing.

Local environmental problems and damage are my main concerns but the mining of other fish stocks as feed and colourants and additives used in production are horrifying. Even growing vegetable oils as feed will take land away from good plant based human food. We have got to change our diets. I don't buy or eat salmon, even organic. Almost as bad.

This would appear to be a practical solution to a really serious problem that could, in time, see the end of salmon farming. At a stroke it addresses solution, seal culling and will help to protect the wild salmon. To say nothing of lice containment.
