Calling on the Scottish Parliament to urge the Scottish Government to give the same level of protection to the families of people from Scotland who die abroad as is currently in place for people from England by amending the Fatal Accidents and Sudden Deaths Inquiry (Scotland) Act 1976 to require the holding of a fatal accident inquiry when a person from Scotland dies abroad.

6 October 2009: The Committee agreed to suspend further consideration of the petition until the report on the Review of Fatal Accident Inquiry Legislation by Lord Cullen has been published and to write to the Scottish Government seeking responses to the points raised in the petition and during the discussion. Link to Official Report 6 October 2009

9 February 2010: The Committee agreed to suspend consideration of the petition until the Scottish Government has announced, in light of the report on the Review of Fatal Accident Inquiry Legislation by Lord Cullen, whether it will amend the Fatal Accidents and Sudden Deaths Inquiry (Scotland) Act 1976 to require the holding of a fatal accident inquiry when a person from Scotland dies abroad. Further, it also agreed to write to the Scottish Government and the Foreign & Commonwealth Office seeking a response to specific points. Link to Official Report 9 February 2010  

26 October 2010: The Committee agreed to suspend further consideration of the petition until the Scottish Government has announced, in light of the report on the Review of Fatal Accident Inquiry Legislation by Lord Cullen, whether it will amend the Fatal Accidents and Sudden Deaths Inquiry (Scotland) Act 1976 to require the holding of a fatal accident inquiry when a person from Scotland dies abroad and to ask it how and when it will take forward the recommendation with regards Fatal Accident Inquiry. Link to Official Report 26 October 2010

8 November 2011: The Justice Committee considered PE1280 by Julie Love and Dr Kenneth Faulds on amending the Fatal Accidents and Sudden Deaths Inquiry (Scotland) Act 1976 to require the holding of a fatal accident inquiry when a person from Scotland dies abroad and agreed: to write to the Scottish Government requesting further details of when it intends to introduce legislation to amend the 1976 Act and to keep the petition open, pending the Scottish Government's response. Link to Official Report 8 November 2011

18 February 2014: The Justice Committee considered PE1280 by Dr Kenneth Faulds and Julie Love on fatal accident inquiries and agreed to keep the petition open and to write to the Scottish Government seeking an update on the timescale for introduction of legislation on fatal accident inquiries.

4 November 2014: The Justice Committee agreed to write to the Scottish Government seeking an update on the timescale for the introduction of legislation on fatal accident inquiries, and to consider the petition again once that legislation has been introduced. Link to Official Repor 4 November 2014

3 February 2015: The Justice Committee considered PE1280 by Dr Kenneth Faulds and Julie Love on fatal accident inquiries and agreed to note correspondence from the Minister for Community Safety and Legal Affairs restating the Scottish Government's commitment to introduce a Bill on fatal accident inquiries within the current parliamentary session and to keep the petition open. 21 April 2015: The Justice Committee considered PE1280 by Dr Kenneth Faulds and Julie Love on fatal accident inquiries and agreed to keep the petition open and to consider it in the context of the Committee's consideration of the Inquiries into Fatal Accidents and Sudden Deaths etc. (Scotland) Bill. 5 January 2016: The Justice Committee agreed to close the petition on the basis that the Inquiries into Fatal Accidents and Sudden Deaths etc. (Scotland) Bill as passed addresses the main concerns raised by the petitioners Official Report 5 January 2016
